Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Candles

What is a soy-blend candle?

A soy-blend candle uses a combination of soy wax and one or more other waxes — most commonly coconut wax, paraffin, or beeswax. Blending waxes lets us fine-tune how a candle burns, how well it holds fragrance, and how it looks in the jar. Our blends are crafted to deliver the best possible burn experience in every pour.

Is a soy-blend candle different from a 100% soy candle?

Yes. A 100% soy candle is made entirely from soy wax, while a soy-blend candle contains soy wax alongside other wax types. Both are popular choices — the right option comes down to what performance characteristics matter most to you. Many chandlers (candle makers) choose blends because pure soy wax can produce a softer finish and may not perform as consistently with certain fragrance loads. We use 50% Soy wax.

Why do you use a soy blend instead of 100% soy?

We use a soy blend because it gives us better fragrance throw, a smoother finish, and a more even burn than 100% soy alone. Soy wax is a great base, but blending it with complementary waxes lets us maximize scent performance and candle longevity.

Scent Throw

What is scent throw?

Scent throw describes how well a candle releases its fragrance into the room. There are two types:

  • Cold throw — the scent you smell when the candle is unlit.
  • Hot throw — the scent released while the candle is burning.

A candle can have a strong cold throw but a lighter hot throw, or vice versa, depending on the wax type and fragrance used.

How can I get the best scent throw from my candle?

  • Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before every burn.
  • Allow the candle to burn long enough for the melt pool to reach the edges of the jar on the first use — this helps prevent tunneling and maximizes scent release. We normally recommend 4 hour burn.
  • Burn your candle in a smaller or enclosed space for a stronger scent experience.
  • Keep the candle away from drafts, fans, and air vents, which can disperse the scent before it fills the room.

Why does my candle smell stronger/weaker than I expected?

Scent perception is very personal — factors like the size of your room, air circulation, and individual sensitivity all affect how strong a fragrance smells. If your candle seems lighter than expected, try burning it in a smaller space or for a longer session (always within safe burn times).

Ingredients & Sensitivities

What ingredients are in your candles?

Our candles are made with a soy-blend wax, fragrance oils, and a cotton-core wick. Specific fragrance ingredients vary by scent. If you have a known sensitivity to a particular ingredient, please contact us before purchasing and we'll do our best to share what we can about the fragrance composition.

Are your candles safe for people with fragrance sensitivities?

We use high-quality Phthalates free fragrance oils in our candles. While we take care in selecting our fragrances, we cannot guarantee that any candle is free from allergens, as fragrance blends can contain a wide range of aromatic compounds. If you have known fragrance allergies or sensitivities, we recommend consulting with a healthcare professional before use, burning candles in well-ventilated spaces, and starting with a short burn session to gauge your personal response.

Do your candles contain phthalates, paraffin, or other additives?

We are happy to answer specific ingredient questions. Please reach out to us directly for details about a particular product's formulation.

Are your candles pet-friendly or child-safe?

All candles should be kept out of reach of children and pets, and never left burning unattended. Some essential oils and fragrance compounds can be harmful to animals — if you have pets, especially cats or birds, we recommend burning candles in areas with good ventilation and limiting exposure. Please consult your veterinarian if you have specific concerns about a fragrance.

Burning & Care

How long should I burn my candle?

For the best burn, we recommend sessions of 2–4 hours. Burning longer than 4 hours can cause the wick to mushroom, produce excess soot, or cause the jar to overheat. Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time, and always stop burning when about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom.

How do I prevent tunneling?

Tunneling happens when the wax melts only around the wick, leaving a ring of unmelted wax along the sides. To prevent it, allow the candle to burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted on the first use. This "memory burn" sets the pattern for all future burns.

My candle has a white, dusty-looking coating. Is something wrong?

This is called frosting, and it is a natural characteristic of soy and soy-blend waxes. It does not affect the scent or burn quality of the candle — it is simply the wax expressing its natural crystalline structure. It is actually a sign that your candle contains real soy wax.
